President Chino meets NGOs

Pres. Tadao Chino

ADB President Chino stressed the important role of NGOs in the processes of development in a meeting with representatives of about 30 NGOs at the Hawaii Convention Center on Tuesday 8 May. He reassured the NGO representatives that ADB will continue to work closely with NGOs and its new NGO center is working to forge stronger relations with them.

“We have achieved a closer working relationship with NGOs and civil society. However, we also realize that much remains to be accomplished,” he said. More than half of ADB projects and programs approved in 2000 involved NGOs in a significant way.

NGOs made a number of recommendations and commented on ADB’s operations. One NGO member called on the President to increase direct interaction with NGOs in ADB operations, rather than contracting with NGOs through governments. “With the creation of the ADB-wide NGO Cooperation Network and the establishment of the NGO Center early this year, we have more resources so we can work together to reflect your suggestions in our operations,” said President Chino.
