Child Labor and Poverty
8 May 2001 (4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m.)

(Organized by the Asian Development Bank)

A Better Future for Children

Child labor, particularly its worst forms, is linked to poverty. Therefore, addressing child labor and promoting improved socio-economic status of children and their families closely relates to ADB's overarching goal of poverty reduction. There is also a growing regional consensus on the importance of eliminating worst forms of child labor in Asia.

This Seminar intends to promote understanding of child labor issues and how it links to poverty. It will also update participants on the best practices established to abolish worst forms of child labor and to reduce poverty of child labor and their families.

Discussion Topics

  • What is the relationship between child labor and poverty?
  • How does investment affect child labor?
  • What are the worst forms of child labor?
  • Successful experiences in addressing poverty concerns of child laborers and their families by the private sector, governments and the NGOs.
