The ICT Revolution: Can Asia Leapfrog Poverty Barriers
7 May 2001 (11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.)

(Organized by the Asian Development Bank)

ICT for Development

Speakers - government officials, industry leaders, civil society representatives - will share their experiences and vision on how information and communication technology (ICT) can improve poor people's lives.

Bridging the Divide

While challenges of harnessing ICT for development are great, the opportunities are enormous. ICT can

  • improve service delivery to the poor
  • provide better and equal access to information
  • connect remote areas to the rest of the world

For example, in 1997 ADB pioneered loans to Grameen Phone in Bangladesh for affordable telephone services to rural communities.

By recognizing opportunities to use ICT, countries can take small steps that have a substantial impact and leapfrog poverty barriers.
