Regional Cooperation: The Way Forward
8 May 2001 (4:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m.)

(Organized by the Asian Development Bank)

Alongside the process of globalization the Asian region has seen the emergence of several regional cooperation arrangements. The Asian Development Bank has been actively involved in assisting some of these arrangements. Similar arrangements have also emerged in other regions of the world. These regional/subregional arrangements raise important questions in the context of globalization:

  • Is there a need for regional cooperation/ regional integration in the context of globalization?
  • What are the merits of such arrangements?
  • Are these win-win arrangements, or are there winners and losers in the distribution of their benefits?
  • What is the role of such arrangements in the context of stability and external shocks?
  • Why are some regional arrangements more successful than others?
  • What is the future of such arrangements?

A distinguished panel of speakers will discuss these questions and other key aspects of the regional approach to globalization in the seminar.
