HIGHLIGHTS »

The Future of Regional Institutions in Asia and the Pacific
8 May 2001 (2:00 p.m.-3:30 p.m.)

(Organized by the Asian Development Bank with with the East-West Center)

International Regimes as a Public Good

Public goods such as international regimes providing common frameworks for international exchange, environmental protection, and much more are increasingly central to the well-being of the nations and individuals of the world. While it is clear that nations need to cooperate to provide such public goods, should cooperation be amongst all of the nations of the world? Or is there a place for regional cooperation within the context of global cooperation?

Discussion Topics

The seminar is intended to provide perspectives on global and regional cooperation, focusing on regional institutions in Asia and the Pacific. Questions considered include

  • How can we ensure that regional arrangements do not detract from global arrangements but rather promote or supplement them?
  • In what areas and how can regional cooperation be fostered in Asia?
  • How can institutions, which facilitate such cooperation, be made more effective?
