FIDEL V. RAMOS is the 12th president of the Republic of the Philippines. Espousing the principles of people power and global competitiveness during his term from 1992 to 1998, he steered the economy to recovery, implemented a comprehensive social reform agenda, and interacted with many world leaders. Mr. Ramos has an equally distinguished military career, having risen through the ranks of the military to become chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines from 1986-1988, and subsequently, secretary of national defense from 1988-1991. Currently, he is chair of the Ramos Peace and Development Foundation and remains active in several international organizations involved with the promotion of peace, human development, and anticorruption, among many other global concerns.
