Megacities: Local, Regional, and Global Environmental Challenges

Wednesday, 8 May
1:30 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

As the growth of cities continues unabated, urban environment problems are placing local, regional and even the global population in jeopardy. The costs in terms of impairment of health, reduced productivity, and others fall disproportionately on the poor.

Managing urban environment is a particularly serious issue for Asia, as its population is moving to cities at an unprecedented rate. In Asia's developing countries, the proportion of urban population is expected to rise from 38 percent in 2000 to 50 percent by 2020.

It is predicted that 173 cities in Asia will have populations exceeding one million. Asia hosts 18 out of a global total of 27 cities expected to have population over 10 million by 2015.

The Seminar will focus on the pressures of urbanization on the environment and how to manage the challenges posed by urbanization at the local, regional and global level.

  • What are the human risks of life in large cities in Asia?
  • How have cities coped with the pressures of growing population placed on its environmental infrastructure and services?
  • How can competing demand for resources between urban and rural consumers, and industrial and agricultural development be managed?
  • What are the global impacts of growth of megacities?
