BILL MILLER is CEO and chief investment officer of Legg Mason Capital Management. He manages the Value Trust and Opportunity Trust mutual funds and co-manages the Special Investment Trust mutual fund with assistance from the firm's investment team. He assumed the overall responsibility for equity funds management in late 1990s. He joined Legg Mason in 1981 and co-managed the Legg Mason Value Trust from its inception in 1982 while serving as the firm's director of research. Before joining Legg Mason, he was the treasurer of J.E. Baker Company, a major manufacturer of products for the steel and cement industries. He serves on the board of the Santa Fe Institute, one of the world's leading scientific research laboratories, which conducts multidisciplinary research in complex systems theory. He earned an economics degree from Washington and Lee University in 1972. Subsequently, he served as a military intelligence officer overseas and then pursued graduate studies in philosophy in the doctorate program at The Johns Hopkins University. He received his Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation in 1986.
