Governors' Seminar: A Road Map for Asia's Economic Cooperation and Integration

3 May 2005 (400 p.m. - 6:00 p.m.)

The Asian economies have grown swiftly in the past 50 years. They have also been integrating. Cooperation has so far focused on bilateral and subregional arrangements, and on international trade and investment, money and finance, and infrastructure development. More recently, "bridges" and "linkages" are also being built across subregions, and Asia, as a whole, is beginning to integrate.

The governors of ADB will share their perspectives on the following:

  • How can integration contribute to Asia's sustainable economic growth, build resilience to external shocks, and prevent financial contagion?
  • What are the steps and strategies for successful integration and how should they be sequenced?
  • What lessons do integration efforts in Europe and other regions provide for Asia?
