Institutional Investors' Roundtable

5 May 2005 (12:00 noon - 2:00 p.m.)

Private Equity in Asia: Strengthening the Role of Domestic Institutional Investors
Emerging Markets Private Equity Assocition    Pacific Pension Institute    Warburg Pincus
(Organized in cooperation with Emerging Markets Private Equity Association [EMPEA], Pacific Pension Institute [PPI], and Warburg Pincus)

The 2005 Institutional Investors Roundtable aims to bring together institutional investors from ADB's developing member countries as well as those from countries with developed financial markets to share insights and ideas on how institutional investors in Asia's emerging markets can participate more in private equity investments.

Asia's private equity markets have been dominated by foreign investors and fund managers even though its institutional investors have become fairly well-developed financial intermediaries such as pension funds, banks, and insurance companies. At the same time, there is no shortage of domestic capital, especially in most Asian countries, where savings rates are high.

The roundtable's format encourages creative and open dialogue. The participants, including the moderator and speakers, will include senior representatives from Asian and foreign pension funds, insurance companies, and banks.

The following are some key topics:

  • What regulatory barriers hinder Asian institutional investment in private equity? How can they be overcome?
  • What best practices from developed and emerging markets have encouraged domestic institutional investment in private equity?
  • How can ADB catalyze greater Asian institutional investment in private equity?
  • How can the private sector more effectively advocate public policy reform to strengthen the private equity investment climate?
