William W. Lewis
WILLIAM W. LEWIS is director emeritus at McKinsey Global Institute. He recently retired as a senior partner
in McKinsey & Co. Inc. after 20 years with the firm. His responsibilities included being the founding director of
the McKinsey Global Institute. Before joining McKinsey, he held several policy-making positions in the US
government, including acting secretary of energy and principal deputy assistant secretary of defense. Earlier
he served as associate provost at Princeton University and as a senior financial officer at the World Bank. He
is a member of the boards of the National Bureau of Economic Research; the Committee for Economic Development;
the Center for Economic Research and Graduate Education, Prague; and Santa Lucia Conservancy.
He has written the book The Power of Productivity. He holds a doctoral degree in theoretical physics from
Oxford University, and a bachelor’s degree from Virginia Polytechnic Institute, USA, where he was a Rhodes
scholar.
