Shoji Nishimoto
SHOJI NISHIMOTO is director, Bureau for Development Policy in the United Nations Development Programme
(UNDP). He joined UNDP with over 21 years’ of experience with ADB in Manila. His most recent position was
director general of the Strategy and Policy Department, where he played a significant role in the formulation
and enhancement of many of ADB’s operational policies, including the long-term strategic framework (2001-
2015), which aligned ADB’s work with the Millennium Development Goals; the governance policy and social
protection policy; and ADB’s poverty reduction strategy. Previously, he served as an associate economic affairs
officer at the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Bangkok,
and as an economist at the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Rome. He holds a postgraduate degree
in economics from the University of Hawaii, USA.
