Andre Sapir
ANDRE SAPIR is professor of economics at the Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB), where he is also a
member of European Center for Advanced Research in Economics and Statistics (ECARES), senior fellow at
the Brussels European and Global Economic Laboratory (BRUEGEL), and holds a chair in international economics
and European integration. He is also a research fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research
(CEPR), and a member of European Commission President Barroso’s Economic Policy Analysis Group. Until
2005, he worked 12 years for the European Commission, first as economic advisor to the director-general for
economic and financial affairs. In 2001-2004, he was economic advisor to President Prodi and executive
president of his economic analysis group. He was chairman of the high-level study group that produced the
report “An Agenda for a Growing Europe” in 2003. He is co-editor-in-chief of the Journal of Industry, Competition
and Trade, and an editorial board member of the World Trade Review. He is a steering committee
member of the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute, and the
World Bank’s Annual Bank Conference on Development Economics in Europe. He has a bachelor’s degree
from ULB and doctoral degree from Johns Hopkins University, USA.
