Integration of Asian Financial Markets

(Organized in cooperation with State Bank of India)

6 May 2006 (12:00 p.m. - 2:00 p.m.)

In the era of globalization and liberalization, one of the main challenges faced by countries is to adapt themselves to the needs—as well as associated risks—of an increasingly integrated financial system, at both regional and global levels. In Asia, while some regional cooperation is already underway, Asia needs to enhance trade and financial cooperation by reducing barriers to cross-border economic activity and broaden cooperation to include more countries.

The seminar will cover such questions as:

  • What are some of the critical connections between financial, trade, and monetary integration? Are there prerequisites for successful financial market integration?
  • What lessons, if any, can be drawn from the experience of the European Union (EU) and other regional arrangements on issues of financial regulation, infrastructure and sequencing?
  • What are the issues relating to deepening and upgrading of national and regional (government and corporate) bond and equity markets as a means of reducing the region’s heavy reliance on banks?
  • To what extent do national financial systems need to be strengthened first?
  • Is the evolving cooperation among the economies in Asia ultimately going to lead to a single market and a single currency in the region?
  • What policy coordination may be needed among governments to minimize the probability of systemic risk?
