Masahiro Kawai

MASAHIRO KAWAI joined the Asian Development Bank Institute in January 2007 after serving as Head of ADB's Office of Regional Economic Integration and special advisor to ADB’s President on regional economic cooperation and integration.

Prior to this, he was an Assistant and Associate Professor in the Economics Department of Johns Hopkins University, and a Professor at the Institute of Social Science of Tokyo University.

He was also Chief Economist for the World Bank's East Asia and Pacific Region. He also served as Deputy Vice Minister of Finance for International Affairs in Japan 's Ministry of Finance.

He has published a number of books and articles on economic globalization, regional financial integration and cooperation in East Asia , and the international currency system.

He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Tokyo University , and earned his master’s degree in statistics and doctorate degree in economics from Stanford University.
