Building Seamless Connections for New Prosperity - the CAREC Vision
4 May 2010 (2:00 pm - 3:30 pm)
The Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) is an ADB initiative that brings together eight countries in the region and six multilateral institutions. CAREC promotes economic development by maximizing regional public goods in trade, transport and energy. The outcome is to ensure seamless connection among the CAREC countries, and between the CAREC region and the global market. Given that most CAREC countries are land-locked, such seamless connection is vital for sustainable growth for the region. CAREC's priority areas are transport, trade facilitation and trade policy, and energy cooperation. The CAREC program has the potential to significantly change the region and affect the neighboring economies across Eurasia.
The seminar will examine the challenges and opportunities facing the CAREC region both from the views of private sector and public sector policy makers, and recommend how some of these issues can be addressed through regional cooperation mechanisms under CAREC.
The seminar will touch upon issues on customs cooperation, trade logistics, trade finance, supply chain management, and transport corridor investment and management, as well as issues on how to harness the region's immense energy potential. Specific examples and international best practices on how to reap regional public goods through cooperation in policy making, coordinated investments, and private sector participation will be showcased in the seminar.
