Helping the Poor

How ADB Is Helping the Poor in Bangladesh
Water and Sanitation
updated April 2003

Second Water Supply and Sanitation

The project has helped to provide improved water supply and sanitation facilities to the district towns of Bagerhat, Dinajpur, Faridpur, Jamalpur, Kushtia, Pabna, Rangpur, Sylhet and Tangail where 60 percent of the population are poor.

Consumers are receiving good quality water for longer periods and at adequate pressure. To extend the benefits to the poorer section of the community, a hand pump tube well program has been provided by the project in the fringe areas for those who cannot afford piped water supply.

The improved water supply and sanitation facilities are contributing to improved health conditions.

Small Scale Water Resources Development

The project facilitates sustainable growth in the agricultural production to increase the income of about 140,000 families who are mostly small landholders or landless farmers in western Bangladesh.

To achieve higher productivity in crop production and other on-farm activities, the projects seeks to remove constraints imposed by inadequate flood protection, water logging, and limited irrigation. It also helps establish sustainable operation and maintenance systems through beneficiary participation.

The project provides employment to women through labor contracting societies in various earthwork-related infrastructure development components, such as

  • road and embankment construction
  • canal digging
  • infrastructure maintenance
  • tree plantation and care
