Status of the Grant 0041: Prevention and Control of Avian Influenza in Asia and the Pacific ProjectOn 14 March 2006, ADB approved a $38 million grant project for Prevention and Control of Avian Influenza in Asia and the Pacific. This project confirms ADB’s commitment to support international efforts to contain the effects of avian influenza. The project has three main components, namely:
Because the threat of avian influenza cannot be addressed separately by each country, through this project, ADB is supporting regional collaboration, with the medium term objective to strengthen the regional capacity to address emerging diseases. In keeping with the project’s objective, significant grant resources from the project will be used to support ADB's developing member countries through regional activities implemented in collaboration with international agencies. Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations and the World Health Organization (WHO) are the two main international agencies in avian influenza prevention and control activities. They serve both as coordinating agencies, working with governments to ensure that information is shared and responses are consistent, and as technical resource centers, providing technical support to the implementation of avian influenza related activities. The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Secretariat will also be supported by the project. ADB entered into Grant Agreement with ASEAN Secretariat, FAO and WHO.
