Employment Opportunities with ADB

Does ADB provide funds for academic programs or short-term courses?

Yes. ADB provides opportunities for talented individuals from its developing member countries to pursue postgraduate studies through the ADB-Japan Scholarship Program.

The scholarships, for periods of one to three years, cover studies in economics, management, science and technology, and other development-related fields. It covers full tuition fees, allowances, medical insurance, and travel expenses.

ADB does not have funds to sponsor individuals for short-term courses nor higher studies outside of this Program.

Does ADB have an Internship Program?

ADB conducts an Internship Program every year. It normally commences in July and extends for approximately two months.

An applicant should be

Interested students should submit applications to their schools, which in turn will select the top three applications for ADB short-listing.

What is ADB's Young Professionals Program?

The Young Professionals (YP) Program enables the recruitment of well-qualified younger personnel - 30 years old or below - into ADB.

The Program lays the foundation for a challenging and rewarding professional career in an international working environment. It provides

  • on-the-job training
  • participation in missions
  • short-term formal training tailored to individual needs.

YPs acquire a range of professional skills and an understanding of ADB's operations, policies, and procedures.

ADB Operations and Assistance to Cambodia

How is ADB helping the poor in Cambodia?

ADB's assistance to Cambodia focuses on social development, economic growth and infrastructure rehabilitation. Under the current Country Strategy and Program, the priority sectors are:

  • agriculture
  • education
  • finance
  • transport

How can nongovernment organizations (NGOs) receive ADB support?

As a rule, ADB works through the governments of its developing member countries in supporting NGOs. ADB recognizes the growing importance of NGOs' role in development and promotes ADB-NGO cooperation in strengthening civil society's participation in the development process.

In February 2001, ADB established the NGO Center at its headquarters in Manila, Philippines. The NGO Center seeks to find new ways of working with NGOs and aims to integrate better the experience and knowledge of working with NGOs in ADB operations.

What is the volume of ADB assistance to Cambodia?

ADB has approved 35 loans totalling $840 million (as of 31 December 2004) and has granted 121 technical assistance projects totalling $78 million (as of 28 February 2005) from the Asian Development Fund.

What is ADB's role in the Greater Mekong subregion (GMS)?

With ADB's assistance, Cambodia, the People's Republic of China, Lao People's Democratic Republic, Myanmar, Thailand, and Viet Nam have entered into a program of subregional economic cooperation, designed to enhance economic relations among the countries.

The program has contributed to the development of infrastructure to enable the development and sharing of the resource base, and promote the freer flow of goods and people in the subregion. It has also led to the international recognition of the subregion as a growth area.

What is the Japan Fund for Poverty Reduction - JFPR?

The JFPR was established in 2000 through a special - and very generous -- $90 million contribution of the Government of Japan. It provides additional assistance in ADB's fight against poverty. As of 8 August 2002, total ADB-approved projects is $42.23 million.
