Loan and grant assistance to nine of ADB’s 10 developing member countries of Central and West Asia totaled about $3 billion during 2007, twice the annual average of $1.5 billion in 2002-2006. Pakistan continued to be the main recipient, with seven project loans valued in total at $2 billion. The 10th country – Georgia (ADB’s newest member), received its first aid package in September 2008 to help rehabilitate water supply, sanitation, waste management and road transport services.
The region has seen several major advances in regional cooperation on trade policy, transport, and energy in recent years, most significantly under the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation Program.
