Project Impact
The construction of 500 kilovolt (kV) transmission line and substation will allow an export capacity of about 1,000 megawatt (MW) from Lao PDR to Viet Nam.

Project Outcome
Project Design agreed between Governments of Lao PDR, Viet Nam and ADB for constructing the 500 kV high voltage transmission lines and substation linking the two countries that will improve the reliability of power supply in Viet Nam.

Project Outputs
The feasibility studies completed will include determining the technical, economic and financial viability, and the social and environmental of the transmission lines and associated substations. The Project includes (i) construction of about 65 kilometers (km) of 500 kV double-circuit transmission line from Ban Sok substation in Lao PDR to the Vietnamese border; (ii) construction of about 100 km of 500 kV double-circuit transmission line from the Lao PDR border to the existing Plei Cu substation in Viet Nam; (iii) construction of the 500/220kV Ban Sok substation in Lao PDE; and (v) extension of the 500 kV Plei Cu substation in Viet Nam.

Consulting Services
The PPTA will require about 48 person months of consulting services, including 22 person-months of international and 28 person-months of national consulting services. The consulting team will consist of power system planning, transmission line, substation, financial, economics, legal, environmental, and social development specialists.

Approved by the Bank : 26 August 2008

Recruitment of Consultants
A consulting firm will be engaged by ADB in accordance with the Guidelines on the Use of Consultants (2007, as amended from time to time). Recruitment of consultants is expected to take place in June-July 2008. Mobilization in Sep-Oct 2008.
