The Environment Program describes ADB's achievements over the last five years in the environment field and looks at the major elements of its forthcoming environment program up to 2002.

It comes at a time when ADB's overarching objective has shifted toward poverty reduction, which will necessitate a complementary sharpening of focus of its environment program.

The book describes the work already being carried out in this regard, the environmental challenges and opportunities faced by its individual developing member countries, and ADB's approach to specific environmental themes, such as

  • biodiversity conservation
  • urban problems
  • water resources
  • forest management
  • natural disasters

The Environment Program will be updated every two years to provide an up-to-date picture of an agenda that must respond to the needs of an ever-changing region.
