Malnutrition's causes and solutions at each stage of the human life cycle are discussed in a regional study on Nutrition Trends, Policies and Strategies and synthesized in this publication.

The study aims to create a better understanding of ways to improve life span, quality of life, early cognition and life-long learning, and earning capacity of individuals and nations.

This publication

  • covers under- and over-nutrition and micronutrient deficiencies in the Asian and Pacific region where most of the world's malnourished live
  • quantifies the cost of malnutrition and the cost effectiveness and rates of return on nutrition investments
  • defines a partnership of communities, governments, and the private sector to prevent malnutrition and promote health and productivity
  • analyzes management and institutional support for nutrition, including capacity needs
  • proposes a financing strategy for raising investment
  • presents a typology of ADB developing member countries to match capacity to need

Several statements in this ADB publication were closely based on a prepublication draft commissioned by the World Bank, entitled "Richard Heaver, Improving Nutrition: Issues in Management and Capacity Development." Although the World Bank draft was not available to ADB during the final editing of its publication, ADB regrets this oversight and extends an apology to Richard Heaver and the World Bank. Page numbers where references to the World Bank should be noted are listed in the corrigendum.
