ADB is committed to the millennium development goals (MDGs) as a measure of poverty reduction in the Asia-Pacific region. The MDGs for health are critical because the region has the highest incidence of preventable deaths among women and young children.

This Primer emphasizes that environmentally friendly policies in all sectors of development will improve the health of human populations in a way that complements the benefits from health services. It also signals ADB's awareness that good health can and should be a crosscutting objective of all development programs receiving assistance.
