A Generation of Growth

Standing (L-R): Sato, Yoshida, Fujioka, Tarumizu; Seated (L-R): Inoue, Watanabe

In 1966, when the Asian Development Bank began operations, the first President, Takeshi Watanabe, noted that the Asian and Pacific region was begining to emerge "from a long sleep" and that "the time has come to roll up our sleeves."

The region has done precisely that. We are proud to play a modest, but significant role in the economic and social development in our developing member countries. Over the years, while needs have changed, the Bank has tried to respond positively and creatively to these changes.

This is an overview of our history.
