Country Assistance Plans - Kiribati : III. Sector Strategies

B. Infrastructure

19. Kiribati is one of the most isolated countries in the Central Pacific and is remote from major markets and communication networks. Its islands are widely dispersed and domestic and international air and marine transport links are difficult. The international runway and the main wharf in Tarawa were upgraded recently with external assistance.

20. Power generation and distribution in South Tarawa remains unstable with frequent breakdowns and fluctuations in voltage. Assistance is being provided by the Australian Agency for International Development (AusAID) to assist the PUB in management of power generation and distribution services. Some progress have already been made in this area, and it is expected that the ongoing ADB TA for management and financial advisory services for restructuring of PUB will complement the work done by other assistance agencies in the area.
