E.Poverty Dimensions of ADB Operations

25. The ongoing SAPHE (poverty interventions) project will significantly contribute to improvements in the quality of life for the people of Tarawa by providing safe drinking water, improving public health, and the environment. The proposed OIDP in 2000 (poverty interventions) and OIDP Implementation in 2002 would improve social and economic opportunities for the people of the outer islands through promotion of employment generation activities, and improved physical and social infrastructure. This would contribute to improving the productivity of local activities and lead to higher cash incomes as well as improve the quality of life in the outer islands. The proposed Poverty Assessment and Strategy TA in 2001 will assist the Government to identify a country specific poverty line for Kiribati and to prepare a poverty reduction strategy to be reflected in MTS.
