Highlights

Fostering Human Development

ADB's focus is on

  • reforming primary and secondary education for improving quality and efficiency of the educational system
  • improving the delivery of urban primary health care services, and addressing malnutrition
  • building local government capacity to deliver high quality services to the urban poor.
Mainstreaming Gender Concerns

In line with ADB's operating policies, BRM helps to implement gender initiatives in Bangladesh. Several interventions have components that facilitate women's increased access to productive resources, employment opportunities, and social services.

Key areas of focus will be:

  • increasing the return on women's labor through improving their access to productive resources and skills development
  • strengthening the capacity of institutions to facilitate women's participation in decision-making processes
  • providing social protection to vulnerable women.
Improving Governance
  • Improving governance is the key challenge facing Bangladesh to fully realize the country's growth potentials and achievement of development objectives.
  • Sector interventions in energy, transport, financial, and social sectors aim to improve public sector management as well as corporate governance of the post-reform unbundled sector entities.
  • Strengthen support for anti-corruption initiatives including support to the Government for establishing an independent anticorruption commission.
Promoting Broad-Based and Private Sector-Led Economic Growth
  • Stimulate private sector development through strengthening both public and private sector operations.
  • Assist in developing physical infrastructure and financial sector, improving corporate governance, and developing professionally managed regulatory authorities.
Promoting Regional Cooperation
  • Foster regional cooperation by assisting the Government to reform the external trade regime and active participation in ongoing South Asia Subregional Economic Cooperation (SASEC) assisted by ADB and other subregional cooperation initiatives
  • Support improved regional and integrated subregional transport and energy network, including streamlined cross-border arrangements among the countries in the subregion, as well as regional cooperation in tourism, environment, trade, and investment; and enhance the country's position as a transport and transshipment hub, in the subregion.
