Report on the South Asia Department Economists' Annual Conference 2006
The Report on the South Asia Department Economists' Annual Conference 2006 is the first publication on the Economists' Annual Conference. The report is prepared for wider dissemination of the papers presented during the Conference, and to document relevant points of discussion. The South Asia Department Economists' Annual Conference was launched three years ago to discuss economic issues of concern to the region as a whole, and to individual South Asian countries. The Conference also provides a forum for an exchange of views on ongoing and completed economic, thematic, and sector work; to take stock of progress on agreements reached during the previous year’s Meeting; and to discuss future work plans. The third Conference was held in New Delhi, India on 7–8 December 2006. It highlighted the following themes: (i) South Asia Alternative Development Models; and (ii) Trade, Regional Cooperation, and Economic Integration in South Asia. The theme of South Asia Alternative Development Models was selected to examine the emerging development patterns in South Asia, particularly the service export and service sector-led growth exhibited most notably by India, and exceptional social indicators despite sluggish economic growth achieved by Sri Lanka. The theme of Trade, Regional Cooperation, and Economic Integration in South Asia is based on our recognition that the opportunities for regional cooperation and integration in South Asia largely remain untapped. The papers on this theme propose broad operational strategies to further facilitate regional cooperation and economic integration in South Asia.
