Senior Officials' Meeting on Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation

At the invitation of ADB, delegations from the People's Republic of China (PRC), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and Azerbaijan met for two days in Manila, Philippines (ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines: 8-10 August 2001), which discussed ADB's program of support for Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation.
More specifically, the participants discussed and confirmed:
- the priority areas ADB should concentrate on in facilitating regional cooperation
- the institutional framework that would best serve implementation of the ADB program
- preparations for a Ministerial Conference scheduled 5-9 November 2001 in Urumqi, PRC.

Objectives
The objective of the meeting was to build consensus, thorough discussions, on
- the overall institutional framework
- the priority areas and activities of the CAREC Program
This has set the stage for a formal endorsement by the participating governments of the overall institutional framework and the priority areas of the Program towards end 2001.
Expected Output
- A summary of discussions that reflected the participating governments' clear position on each of the two themes. This summary formed the basis for formal endorsement by the governments at a later stage.
Target Participants
- Three senior officials from each of the governments of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the People's Republic of China.
- Observers from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan
- Senior officials of ADB
