ADB-ESCAP Joint Workshop on Mobilizing Domestic Finance for Development

Reassessment of Bank Finance and Debt Markets in Asia and the Pacific

Objectives

  • Exchange views on financial sector development, in particular on how to reduce over-reliance on bank borrowing through the development of debt markets especially for small and medium sized businesses
  • Discussions will focus on major issues on bank lending, bond market, microfinance, and small and medium enterprise finance

Expected Outputs

Discussion results will provide critical inputs to an ESCAP-ADB position paper which will be prepared soon after the Workshop, and to be presented to the UN High-Level Conference on Financing for Development on 18-23 March 2002 in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico.

Workshop Participants

The participating countries in the seminar - India, Malaysia, the Republic of Korea, and Thailand - have been chosen on the basis of their varying levels of financial development.
