ADB/PARIS21 Joint High Level Forum on Statistical Capacity Building for ASEAN Countries
EDSA Shangri-la Hotel, Manila, Philippines: 7-9 November 2002



Purpose

The Forum aims to mobilize international support to improve statistical capacity of the ASEAN countries.

Objectives

The Forum will allow participants to discuss issues related to the use and the production of statistics, and review future work programs to strengthen national statistical systems.

Expected Outputs

The Forum is expected to contribute to shaping a strategy for strengthening national statistical capacity and making the statistical agencies capable of meeting the increasing data demand of the planners, decision makers, and researches as well as the private sector and civil society. Such a strategic capacity building should also allow countries to respond to demands that are generated by the commitment of the global community to the achievement of the Millennium Development Goals.

Target Participants

  • A 5-member team from the ASEAN countries (Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Viet Nam):
    • Minister in charge of statistics
    • Senior Manager from the National Planning Agencies
    • Senior Manager from Ministries of Finance and/or Central Banks
    • Senior Manager from National Statistics Office
    • Media Representatives/NGOs

  • Donor agencies/International and Bilateral Organizations [ASEAN Secretariat, Asian Development Bank (ADB), Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), Deutsche Gesellschaft fur Technische Zusammenarbeit (GTZ), EC-Eurostat, Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), Japan - Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st century (PARIS21), Statistical Institute for Asia and the Pacific (SIAP), Statistics New Zealand, United Kingdom - Department for International Development (DFID), United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), and the World Bank.
