Purpose

The Asian Development Bank together with the International Monetary Fund, the United Nations Development Program, and the World Bank co-sponsor the Second East Asia Regional Conference on Poverty Reduction Strategies.

This conference is a follow-up to the first East Asia Regional Conference on the same subject held in Hanoi in December 2001.

Objectives

The Conference will provide an avenue to

review and exchange experiences on the development of poverty reduction strategies in East Asian countries
identify obstacles and challenges countries face in designing and implementing these strategies
derive lessons learned to help formulate a shared view of next steps for replication in other developing countries.

Expected Outputs

The Conference is expected to:

result in a more coherent understanding of the complexities of the issues, to allow pooling of lessons learned from the participating countries' experiences
provide insights on the emerging issues in the effort to reduce poverty in East Asian countries.

Target Participants

The Conference will be attended by policy makers and stakeholders from six participating countries in East Asia: Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Mongolia, Timor Leste, and Viet Nam.

There will also be delegations from six observing countries: Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea, and Sri Lanka. Delegations will comprise of representatives from the Government, Parliament, civil society, academic and research institutions, and the private sector.

The conference will also be attended by representatives from external partners and donors.
