RETA 6007 on Enhancing Social Gender Statistics
UN Conference Center, Bangkok: 24 June 2003

Purpose

The ADB's overarching goal of poverty reduction and adoption of the millennium development goals (MDGs) heighten the need to monitor social and gender statistics. These statistics are not only essential at the national level but at specific project areas as well and at a higher frequency than they are usually available.

Objectives

This regional technical assistance (RETA) aims to assist Mekong and South Asia developing member countries to

  • Generate and analyze social statistics at the sub-national levels and with gender breakdowns from the census of population; and
  • Explore other sources of these statistics for those years between the census years. The concluding workshop is the culmination of three main activities funded by the RETA. The first of these was the inception workshop where existing social and gender statistics were presented by the national statistical offices (NSOs). These NSOs were requested to undertake methodological studies on the use of alternative data sources for social and gender statistics and generation of sub-national level data with gender breakdowns – as the second main activity.

Expected Outputs

The results of the methodological studies will then be discussed in the concluding workshop and published in the ADB website. (For specific details on each methodological study report, refer to http://www.adb.org/Statistics/6007_workshop.asp)

Target Participants

  • All interested ADB staff

Resource Speakers

Three resource persons were invited to present discussions on the use of small area estimation technique, exploration of alternative data sources, and comparison of data sources between human development reports and MDGs.
