Rm. Takasago, Takaragaike Prince Hotel
Kyoto, Japan
The session ended on 18 March 2003. Read the results.
Central Asia has been experiencing complex and increasing water problems and stress over the past several decades. These problems, which are shared between the basin riparian countries and the Aral Sea, will become more difficult to solve in the future.
While the Central Asian republics (CARs) each pursue their own independent development, they are committed to joint actions when dealing with transboundary water problems of the region. Over the past 10 years, the countries have developed cooperative institutions and policies designed to enable them to address collaboratively the problems of the Aral Sea Basin.
This session highlighted the experiences of CARs in solving transboundary water problems and work towards defining future efforts in the region.
- Past experience and future challenges for regional cooperation in shared water resources in Central Asia
- Integrated water resources management in the context of Aral Sea basin management
- Environmental issues in the Aral Sea basin
