Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) on Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation
Almaty, Kazakhstan 15-16 April 2004

Background

The Senior Officials' Meeting (SOM) held in Almaty on 15-16 April 2004 is the first of two SOMs to be held this year in preparation for the 3rd Ministerial Conference (MC) on Central Asia Economic Cooperation. Delegations from countries participating in the Central Asia Regional Economic Cooperation (CAREC) Program (Azerbaijan, People's Republic of China (PRC), Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan) as well as representatives of multilateral institutions (ADB, EBRD, IMF, ISDB, UNDP, and the World Bank) attended the Meeting.

Objectives

The SOM will:

• review progress made since the 2nd Ministerial Conference (MC)
• discuss the establishment of sector coordinating committee for trade policy
• discuss ways to strengthen regional cooperation, with a focus on the overall institutional framework
• plan activities in preparation for the 3rd MC.

Expected Output

Target Participants

• Participation is by invitation only.
• Two senior officials from each of the governments of Azerbaijan, People's Republic of China, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyz Republic, Mongolia, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
• Representatives of multilateral institutions (ADB, EBRD, IMF, ISDB, UNDP, and World Bank)
