Regional Seminar:
Gender, Poverty and Rural Development
Hanoi, Viet Nam
24-26 March 2004
The 3-day seminar was designed for senior Executing Agency staff of DMC governments responsible for implementing ADB assisted loan projects. The focus was on integrating gender issues in the implementation of ongoing loan projects in agriculture, livestock, water resources management and rural infrastructure sectors.
- First Day: Provide an overview of ADB's Gender and Development policy, guidance on how to do gender analysis and Gender Action Plans and showcase examples of gender inclusive loan design and implementation.
- Second Day: Explore gender issues in more depth in an area of key importance to poverty reduction and rural development: water resources management.
- Third Day: Share experiences in designing and implementing gender responsive programs for poverty reduction and rural development focusing on agriculture, livestock, rural infrastructure, rural finance, and governance. The field level experiences will highlight the importance of building a gender responsive environment at policy, institutional and community levels in order to strengthen local ownership and sustainability of rural development.
The seminar provided project directors with an opportunity to showcase successful gender-inclusive ADB loan projects to participants from Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan and Viet Nam. It also built technical capacity to address gender issues in the agriculture and rural development sectors.
Participants included representatives from 8 DMCs (Bangladesh, Cambodia, Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Uzbekistan, and Viet Nam), including ADB Resident Mission gender specialists.
