Post Workshop Statement

The workshop was held during the annual Greening of Industry Network Conference last 7-10 November 2004. Nearly 70 participants out of the 300-plus conference delegates attended the ADB workshop. A similar workshop was held in Amsterdam, The Netherlands on 26 October 2004.

Key points gleaned from the workshops include:

  1. affirmation of both the scale of and high stakes involved in the region's rapid economic expansion that currently pays little attention to protecting the environment
  2. the need to address issues related to small and medium enterprises (SME), both those linked through global supply chains and those outside of it, such as capacity building, incentives, special policy approaches, etc.
  3. the need for new policies that will encourage innovation rather than incremental improvements.

Purpose

To seek feedback from a wide range of stakeholders regarding corporate responsibility for environmental performance in Asia and the Pacific.

Objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will have:

  • A preview of the initial findings of AEO 2005 as presented by the authors
  • Shared their views regarding corporate responsibility for environmental performance through an open discussion following the author presentations and by filling out the workshop participant work sheet

Expected Outputs

Inputs from the workshop participants will be incorporated in the final AEO report to be presented to the Ministerial Conference on Environment and Development in the Republic of Korea in March 2005.

Target Participants

Business executives, academe, government and NGO officials attending the Greening of Industry Network 2004 Conference.

Resource Speakers

Dr. David Annandale (Murdoch University), Mr. Albert Fry (World Business Council for Sustainable Development), Dr. Peter King (ADB), Dr. David McCauley (ADB) and Mr. Jan van Heeswijk (ADB) will lead the expert panel and open discussion.
