Regional Workshop on Indigenous Peoples and Communal Land Management in Asia
ADB Headquarters, Manila, Philippines, 8-9 December 2004
Asian Development Bank joins indigenous peoples and development
agencies in celebrating the completion of the ‘International Decade
of World’s Indigenous Peoples’. As part of this celebration, RSES
and BPHR organized this workshop to highlight the distinctive relationship
between indigenous peoples and their habitat through the presentation
of in-depth case studies in Asia on communal land management.
- clarify various definitions of indigenous peoples (e.g. tribal,
ethnic minorities, cultural minorities, scheduled tribes, scheduled
castes, and religious minorities) as applied in diverse socioeconomic
settings
- identify socioeconomic and political processes which marginalize
indigenous peoples from the management of their traditional habitat
- examine the adequacy of policies and action programs that aim
to address the above processes
The workshop will enable participants to:
- identify indigenous peoples in diverse socioeconomic environments
- apply ADB’s Indigenous Peoples’ Policy (IPP) and Operations
Manual (OM) F-3 (Indigenous Peoples) in ADB operations
- share knowledge on communal land management and the processes
that marginalize indigenous peoples from the management of their
traditional habitat
- contribute to the preparation of the Indigenous Peoples handbook:
