Gender Mainstreaming in Water Supply and Sanitation

14-15 September 2004
ADB Headquarters, Manila

This training activity was concluded on 15 September 2004.

Background

The Gender in Water Partnership between ADB and the Gender and Water Alliance (GWA) was launched during the 3rd World Water Forum in Japan in March 2003.

In October 2003, ADB and GWA signed a letter of agreement to co-sponsor a program of activities to put this partnership into operation. Among these activities the conduct of training programs to build the capacity of ADB staff in gender and water.

ADB Gender and Water Policies were developed with the purpose not just of pushing for greater inclusion of women, but more for promoting the optimum involvement of all sections of society -- women, men, rich and poor-- in decisions about how to sustain our precious water resources. The training aims to build capacities of ADB staff to include gender perspectives in their own work.

Objectives

The 2-day training on gender and water aims to assist ADB staff in:

  • understanding gender issues in water operations
  • developing knowledge and skills to identify opportunities for gender mainstreaming throughout the project cycle in water projects
  • sharing good practices of gender mainstreaming in on-going ADB water loans
  • developing special gender features within the loans administered by the participants

Participants

The training program is specifically designed for ADB project officers.
