The theme of MCED 2005 is "Achieving Environmentally Sustainable Economic Growth in Asia and the Pacific."

Held every five years, MCED has been an important forum for the assessment of the state of the environment, formulation of actions in response to imperatives posed by important global forums, and for the synthesis of regional perspectives, priorities, and forward-looking agendas.

MCED 2005 will further the implementation of existing globally and regionally agreed sustainable development agendas, particularly as established at MCED 2000 and the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).

The gathering is expected to result in a declaration that will acknowledge the importance of economic growth to poverty alleviation in the region, while also highlighting the need to protect against environmental degradation as rapid growth continues in the Asia-Pacific region.

A Regional Implementation Program will emerge from MCED that will comprise: (i) the "Seoul Initiative" to promote green economic development, and (ii) several other regional and subregional initiatives addressing specific environment and development problems.
