An estimated 175 million people now live outside their countries of birth, making significant contributions to the social and economic development of their host countries, as well as their countries of origin.

The economic power of migrant remittances, as a source of capital and support, is affecting millions of households around the world. In Asia, which accounts for more than half of the world's migrants, and in Latin America as well, remittances have helped address the most basic needs of migrants' families and their communities. The challenge now rests in further transforming the potential of remittances into a sustainable input to poverty alleviation and development efforts.

It is against this backdrop that the conference was designed to provide a forum where ideas may be shared, and networks may be established. The conference aims to promote greater understanding of remittance flows and their impacts on recipient countries through sharing of experiences and best practices. Key stakeholders in the remittance industry are expected to convene to exchange varying perspectives on and regional experiences.
