Visit of Alaska Federation of Natives delegation to ADB Headquarters
6-8 March 2006: ADB Headquaters
A
six-person trade delegation from Alaska
Federation of Natives * (AFN) visited ADB headquarters from
6-8 March 2006 to discuss possible areas for collaboration
and cooperation between ADB and AFN. AFN wanted to explore
how it could work with ADB and its developing member countries
(DMCs) on policies and approaches to support indigenous communities,
impact assessments, options for program delivery to
indigenous communities, and project design.AFN hoped to make
a contribution to the development of indigenous peoples in
Asia, and use its knowledge, expertise and experience possibly
through consulting work with ADB. AFN discussed the unique
culturally-sensitive business practices of Alaska Native Corporations
and the potential for preferential treatment for native-owned
business to assist indigenous peoples.
AFN wishes to offer its expertise and the services of Alaskan Native Corporations
for the benefit of indigenous peoples everywhere.AFN has established
links with international agencies such as ADB and the World
Bank. Both ADB and World Bank participated in AFN’s
Leadership Summit * in Anchorage in June 2004, as well as
in the follow-up seminar held at the U.S. Congress in September
2004. Interesting possibilities of cooperation and collaboration
emerged, particularly with ADB.The North American Representative
Office (NARO) of ADB in Washington, D.C. has been at the forefront
of efforts to forge a collaborative relationship between ADB
and AFN.The AFN mission to ADB headquarters in Manila, Philippines
was an important step in this evolution.
