In March 2007, ADB approved a $1 million grant to support the Asia-Pacific Water Forum (APWF), particularly in organizing the first Asia-Pacific Water Summit in December. The grant also commissioned the Asian Water Development Outlook (AWDO), ADB’s new publication that will serve as investment decision making guide for top-level leaders and policy makers.
The AWDO will
- Showcase good practices and water champions, demonstrating how these helped overcome challenges and issues that confronted the water sector
- Help leaders and decision makers to understand better water sector performance and water sector issues in their respective country situations
- Address both current and future trends in water management practices
An AWDO Team, guided by 2006 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate Professor Asit Biswas and supported by a panel of eminent resource persons, has been constituted to prepare the AWDO. Since its inception meeting in April, the team has conducted several meetings to brainstorm on the AWDO’s objectives, key messages, and the broad contents.
This consultation meeting gathered water experts from the Asia-Pacific to discuss and debate on the draft of the AWDO report.

The meeting aimed to
- showcase the performance of each country with respect to water
- generate discussion among participants on issues highlighted in the draft AWDO
- use these learnings as a basis to determine whether the key messages in the AWDO have covered all water sector issues in the Asia-Pacific region
