In March 2007, the Asian Development Bank (ADB) approved a $1 million grant to support the Asia Pacific Water Forum (APWF), a new network that would address water challenges in the region. The grant also commissioned the preparation of the Asian Water Development Outlook (AWDO), a report that will
- Showcase good practices and water champions, demonstrating how these helped overcome challenges and issues that confronted the water sector
- Help leaders and decision makers to understand better water sector performance and water sector issues in their respective country situations
- Address both current and future trends in water management practices
An AWDO Team, guided by 2006 Stockholm Water Prize Laureate Professor Asit Biswas and supported by a panel of eminent resource persons, was constituted to prepare the AWDO report. Since its inception meeting in April 2007, the team has conducted several meetings to brainstorm on the AWDO’s objectives, key messages, and broad contents. In an experts’ consultation meeting in August 2007, water sector professionals discussed the issues and key messages highlighted in the draft AWDO report.
The AWDO report targets senior government officials involved in making investment decisions, particularly finance and planning ministers and their advisers, to develop a declaration that would boost water investments in the Asia Pacific region. At this meeting, the AWDO report’s key messages were presented to a wide range of stakeholders in the Asia Pacific region.
