In 1996, the World Bank, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA) created the Global Water Partnership (GWP) in response to the global demand for a new coordinating organization that could pull together financial, technical, policy, and human resources to address the critical issues in sustainable water management.
GWP is a working partnership among all those involved in water management: government agencies, public institutions, private companies, professional organizations, and multilateral development agencies, among others. It was borne out of the idea that a more comprehensive and integrated approach to water management was deemed necessary for sustainable development—an idea which emerged in 1992 after the Dublin Conference on Water and the Environment and the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development in Rio de Janeiro. Its mission is to “support countries in the sustainable management of their water resources.”
Today, GWP promotes integrated water resources management (IWRM) programs and principles for countries in several regions of the world. It actively identifies critical knowledge needs at global, regional and national levels, helps design programs for meeting these needs, and serves as a mechanism for alliance building and information exchange on IWRM.
This “First Inter-Regional Consulting Partners Meeting” gathered GWP members from the Asia-Pacific and the Caribbean to discuss pressing IWRM issues.

The meeting aimed to gather insights from GWP members on three IWRM themes/issues:
- Addressing climate change in the context of IWRM
- Addressing IWRM aspects on water supply and sanitation
- Improved knowledge management in IWRM
These insights were inputted into the various regional workplans and the new GWP strategy.
