Gender Specialists' Workshop

Workshop discussions focus on

• Gender Action Plan design,
• challenges and practical solutions to accessing information about loan design and implementation missions
• how to link Gender Action Plans with Design and Monitoring Frameworks
• ensuring quality of consultant outputs
• areas where GSs benefit from the Gender, Social Development and Civil Society Division support, including administrative issues hampering their effectiveness

Resident Mission Gender Specialists presented information on their work in loan processing and developing Gender Action Plans for these projects:

• Cambodia: Education Quality Improvement Project
• Sri Lanka: Education Sector Development Project
• Uzbekistan: Fruit and Vegetable Market Development Project
• Mongolia: Agriculture and Rural Development Project

Also discussed were results and challenges in Gender Action Plan implementation (GAP) under

• Bangladesh: Secondary Towns Flood Protection Project
• Viet Nam: Central Region Livelihoods Improvement Project
• Indonesia: Neighborhoods Upgrading and Shelter Project
• Nepal: Urban Environment Improvement Project

All RM GSs reported strong support by their Country Directors for gender mainstreaming at the program and project levels. Good team spirit among the RM GSs and the larger ADB gender team increased motivation to improve results on GAD policy implementation.

Participants to the Workshop felt that the detailed discussions on the project cycle and loan presentations had clarified expectations on their roles at different stages of loan processing and implementation. In addition, the interactive nature of the workshop allowed the new GSs to ask questions and learn from their more experienced peers.
