Planning Workshop on Strategies and Options for Integrating Biofuels and Rural Renewable Energy for Poverty Reduction

This planned interagency planning meeting is expected to thresh out the policy status of biofuels development in the GMS and produce a plan of action to assess the status of bioenergy development and to develop a regional strategy on biofuels and rural renewable energy in the GMS countries.

The objectives of this interagency planning meeting are to:

  • review the policy status of biofuel development in the GMS countries
  • develop a plan of action for the national and subregional assessment and strategy development on bioenergy and its substitutes
  • discuss the scope for investment cooperation and regulations

The expected outcomes of the workshop are:

  • improved coordination, information, and experience sharing among participating organizations and countries on existing policies, current and future programs, projects, and other initiatives related to biofuel and rural renewable energy
  • agreed project design and methodology of the national assessment, including the composition of country project teams
  • broad plan for national assessment, showing general activities, timetable, and indicative country budget
  • identification of appropriate inputs by resource persons and experts

The workshop participants will include GMS representatives in agriculture, environment, forestry, finance, planning and energy; development partners from FAO, IFAD, CGIAR; the private sector, and resource persons. The outputs of the workshop will feed into national strategies for policy formulation in biofuels and rural renewable energy in agriculture, prefeasibility studies, pilot projects, and a regional framework for investment cooperation in the GMS.
