Asia has always had its share of water-related disasters. Typhoons, flash floods, and landslides are common in monsoon areas. Deserts and semi-arid regions, where rainfall is sporadic and often nil, contend with prolonged droughts. The aftermath of the 2004 Asian tsunami that devastated coastal areas in South and Southeast Asia are still being felt today. Most recently, another tsunami hit the Solomon Islands in the South Pacific. These water-related disasters have inflicted catastrophic losses to human lives and countries’ economies. They also impact on the management of a country’s water resources.
As part of its Action Plan for 2006 – 2007, the Network of Asian River Basin organizations (NARBO) will hold a series of thematic workshops on Water-related Disaster Management. The workshops will focus on NARBO member organizations’ experiences in managing and mitigating the effects water-related disasters in their respective countries. They will include field visits to
- assess damaged sites, recovery conditions, and initiatives for water-related disaster prevention
- evaluate recovery measures of community organizations and other stakeholders
As a final workshop output, NARBO will produce a knowledge product on water-related disaster management that will be useful to its member organizations.
