In 2005, ADB approved a technical assistance (TA) to demonstrate the speedy delivery of piped water supply to urban areas in India, the Philippines, and Viet Nam using small scale water providers (SSWP). The project involves constructing pilot small piped water networks in urban poor communities, conducting surveys to determine the profile SSWPs and water consumers, and setting up a registration system for SSWPs, among others.
Pilot projects in the Philippines have been conducted in collaboration with the Manila’s two concessionaires: Manila Water Company, Inc. and Maynilad Water Services, Inc. A small scale water supply service survey was also conducted to get a profile of the SSWP market.
The TA calls for workshops in the pilot countries to enable stakeholders to distill and refine lessons from their experience with the pilot projects. In this regard, ADB supported this National Conference on Small Water Service Providers in the Philippines.
